We participate in two unique bull development programs each year. This year we have five bulls in each program that will sell in the annual sale at the end of each program. The Optimum Beef Bulls is a somewhat shorter development program. The bulls that sell in the Optimum Sale are born between September 1 and December 31 of each year. They are sent to the Optimum Development Center, located near Alma, Georgia in mid-August and go directly onto a diet of free choice fed soybean hull pellets, Bermuda grass and peanut hay. They are tested for 112 days on this diet for average daily gain and weight per day of age. They are also ultrasound scanned for carcass merit, given a comprehensive breeding efficiency examination and are measured for yearling frame score. They sell the fourth Friday in March, in the Optimum Beef Bulls Sale, that is held in Valdosta, GA on the Pine Ridge Farms Sale Facility.

The Canoochee Forage Bull Development Center is a true "Forage" based bull test. These bulls received absolutely no grain or other feed from the time of delivery on October 29 & 30, 2006 until the end of the forage test on June 10, 2007, except bermudagrass hay, minerals and water. They began the 180 day long forage test about a month later than normal, due to an extremely dry fall. During the forage test, the bulls are ultrasound scanned for carcass merit and are weighed at 60 day intervals to measure gaining ability on forages. At the completion of the forage test on June 10, they remain on pasture and are fed nothing more, until 45 days prior to the sale, when they are given a limited amount of soybean hull pellets to compensate for an annual forage flat spot that occurs each fall in South Georgia.  We wanted our forage test and development program to be realistic and droughts, hurricanes, etc  is an example of how weather conditions can affect anything involved with agriculture. These bulls sell as two year old hard, ready to go bulls that will weigh an average of 1400 lbs. on sale day.
